  CROWN LENGTHENING
There is a healthy physiological space which exists between the gingival margin and the Cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) which is the demarcation between the root and the crown portion of the root. This physiological space is called the biological width and it has been found to be approximately 3mm on average.

If the decay or fracture is too deep, it will violate this natural space. Biological width invasion can lead to chronic inflammation of both soft and hard tissues, chronic pain in the gums, and lack of enough tooth structure to hold the crown long term. In this case, a crown lengthening procedure is necessary to restore the biological width. This procedure involves reflecting a flap, excision of a small soft tissue, and contouring the bone to allow more tooth structure above the gum margin. This allows improved restorability of the tooth structure, and a more healthy periodontal apparatus after the restoration is finalized.
