| SCALING & ROOT PLANNING | ||
Scaling and root planing is the very first phase of treatment against gum disease. In the mild form of periodontal disease this treatment may be sufficient to stop the disease from progression. However, in the more advanced forms of the disease a surgical treatment may be necessary. Hence, it is imperative to have a reevaluation 3 to 4 weeks after scaling and root planing . This reevaluation should be performed by the periodontist if the periodontal disease is considered to be advanced so that an appropriate treatment plan is designed and emplemented . |

| Scaling and root planing consists of one or multiple appointments were the subject areas are locally anesthetized. This gives the practitioner an opportunity to use instruments in order to remove calculus and plaque from below the gum line and root surfaces of your teeth. Many pathogenic forms of bacteria attach to calculus and plaque which harm the gums and the supporting bone around your teeth. Therefore, this procedure helps to improve the health status of the gums. This appointment could also consist of providing the patient with a feedback on their oral hygiene, possible harmful habits, tobacco cessation and an emphasis on the follow up of maintenance visits. | ||
