Recession happens when the gum proceeds to move away from the tooth and exposes the root. This could lead to root cavity or root sensitivity. There are multiple reasons for recession. One can be born with very thin gums which is usually more prone to recession. Harmful oral hygiene habits such as use of inappropriate instruments, abrasive oral hygiene techniques or even poor hygiene can lead to recession. In addition, use of abrasive toothpastes, or placing too much toothpastes on the brush can exacerbate recession.

It is important to diagnose recession prior to the start of an orthodontics treatment since this procedure could also cause recession. Recession along with lack of a resistant gum tissue along the side of the tooth is called mucogingival defect.

This treatment’s primary objective is to stop the progression of recession. Root sensitivity can also be treated in many cases with a soft tissue grafting technique called Subepithelial connective tissue graft.
CONNECTIVE TISSUE GRAFT -A small strip of soft tissue is removed from the palate. This time this tissue is harvested from the underlying portion and consists of connective tissue. FREE GINGIVAL GRAFT - A small strip of soft tissue is removed usually from the palate. This tissue is then sutured to the receipient bed, the area with lack of resistant tissue and stablilizes the gum.

PEDICLE GRAFT - This tissue is harvested from the adjacent soft tissue where there is a good portion of resistant tissue called keratized tissue. This layer of tissue is flapped, rotated and sutured to the recipient area while it is partially attached to the donor site. This is done in such a way in order to add an appropriate amount of tissue to the subject area of recession and mucogingival defect while it does not adversely effect the donor site.
