The success of periodontal procedures, implants, and other types of oral surgery depend on a healthy healing process. Platelet Rich Fibrin is often used with procedures performed here at Beverly Hills Periodontist & Dental Implant Center by Dr. Peiman Soleymani to help ensure that patients recover from their procedures as fully and as rapidly as possible. Fibrin is a key blood protein required for the clotting of blood. Platelet Rich Fibrin (often referred to as PRF) is a type of blood plasma which has been concentrated and enriched with additional platelets, white blood cells, and growth factors that encourage regeneration of tissue.
When is Platelet Rich Fibrin Used?
In the field of dentistry, PRF is considered a growth factor that is used in dental implant and periodontal surgeries in order to optimize the results. It may be especially important in cases where the patient has a condition that may interfere with healing, such as diabetes or even in cases of wisdom teeth removals where the risk of dry sockets may be high. PRF is also often used in bone grafting cases following tooth extractions, ridge augmentation, and sinus augmentation cases.
How is Platelet Rich Fibrin Obtained?
To ensure safety and that PRF is accepted by the body, PRF is derived from blood taken directly from the patient and used immediately after on the same day. Using an advanced centrifuge, the growth factors are separated from the red blood cells. Then, the portion containing the growth factor concentrate is used in bone regeneration either by itself or in conjunction with other bone mediums. For holistic patients who prefer their own blood concentrate rather than bone graft from other sources, this is an outstanding and natural choice.
